Student Leadership and Involvement

As our campus faces expansion, it is of the utmost importance to preserve the JMU community we have grown to know and love. Leadership and involvement in student organizations, I believe, are at the heart of that community. JMU offers 300+ clubs and organizations for students to join; as we expand, I believe involvement will be vital to ensure that students never feel like they are "just a number." Therefore, I hope to increase student involvement and act as a resource to existing organizations by:

  • Spearheading regular round-tables for campus leaders in order to foster relationships between organizations that do not normally interact with one another.
  • Working with the Office of Residence Life to create a program emphasizing the importance of student involvement that can be implemented by Resident Assistants during monthly meetings.
  • Collaborating with Student Organization Services to ensure organizations have up-to-date contact information listed on the SOS website.
  • Exploring the long-term possibility of incorporating Student Organization Night as part of 1787 Orientation week.

Campus Health and Safety

The student body should be empowered and equipped to lead safe and healthy lifestyles that extend beyond their college years. To promote campus health and safety I would like to:

  • Partner with the Office of Health Promotion to make HIV testing free for all JMU students.
  • Advocate for sexual health education and STD testing.
  • As a long-term goal, I would like to garner student support for the installation of blue safety lights off campus. Although JMU is a safe campus, most timely notices occur around off-campus housing - where the majority of our student body resides.

Transportation

There is an increasing desire to alleviate the congestion amounting from on-campus parking and also to provide alternative and efficient means of transportation. These desires will undoubtedly become a pressing need as our campus expands. I will seek solutions for transportation by:

  • Investigating the possibility of the Harrisonburg Department of Transportation allocating a portion of their recent budget increase to the JMU bus system.
  • Advocating for more frequent bus stops as a way of alleviating traffic.
  • Inquiring about the creation of more HOV lots to encourage carpooling.
  • Supporting the addition of more bike racks on campus.

Student-Advisor Relations

I want to ensure that students receive correct and consistent information regarding both major and graduation requirements from their academic advisors. Through collaboration with Major Advising, it will be a priority to better equip both students and advisors with the necessary knowledge and resources to help students satisfy their degree requirements in a timely manner.
